The Palazzo Grassi is a building situated in the San Marco district, between the Palazzo Moro Lin and the Campo San Samuele.
It is a contemporary art museum it also known as the Palazzo Grassi-Stucky that overlooks the Grand Canal. The Palazzo Grassi is part of the Pinault Collection and the impressive museum displays a number of artwork, including the large collection of François Pinault.
The Palazzo Grassi was designed by Giorgio Massari during 1748 and 1772. Some of the frescoes situated in the staircase were decorated by Alessandro Longhi. It was owned by various individuals over the years such as the Braron Simeone De Sina who bought it in 1857. In 1951 it became the International Centre of Arts and Costume. In 1983 it was then bought by Fiat. Milanese architect Gae Aultenti was then appointed to renovate it as an exhibition area. In 2005, an art collector and billionaire Francois Pinault bought the Palazzo Grassi. It was then remodelled by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando and was reopened in 2006 with the exhibition called “Where are we going?”. The Palazzo has an exhibition area of 5000 square metres and is divided into 40 rooms.
In 2007 the Punta della Dogana was also bought by Francois Pinault in order to turn it into a contemporary art museum along with the Palazzo Grassi. The building was also remodelled by Tadao Ando and was reopened after 14months.
