Collezione Peggy Guggenheim (Peggy Guggenheim Collection)

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a modern art museum on the Grand Canal in Venice. More specifically it is situated in the Dorsoduro district between the Santa Maria della Salute  and the Gallerie dell’ Accademia.

It is one of the most visited attractions located in Venice as it is one of Europe’s leading museums dedicated to modern art. In particular the museum attracts around 400.000 visitors per year which is the second most visited attraction after the Doge’s Palace.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is housed in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni which was also Peggy’s home after she bought it from Viscontessa Doris Castlerosse in 1949. The museum was established there and she began displaying her work in public in 1951. The Palazzo Venier dei Leoini is an 18^th century palace which was designed by Lorenzo Boschetti. It was also where Peggy Guggenheim lived for thirty years.Peggy Guggenheim, a passionate art collector and patron, played a pivotal role in promoting modern art during the 20th century. Her vision and support for emerging artists helped shape the art world, and the collection housed in the museum is a testament to her enduring legacy.

The collection is made up from the personal collection of Peggy Guggenheim who was previously married to Max Ernst a German artist. Her collection as well as the Palazzio were then passed on to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The collection is made up of 20^th century art which range from Cubism, Surrealism and abstract expressionism.
